Sink or swim

How promotions can be a trap, and what to do about it

While biking through the Norwegian fjords yesterday, my friend told me he got promoted at work.

“Congrats!” I shouted while trying to hide his uphill pace was killing me.

He got a new role at the engineering firm where he works, which means he now manages a team and a handful of client projects.

He’s worked hard for that, and I couldn’t be happier for him.

But there’s an evil plot twist…

You see, with that new role comes more responsibility and more pressure - both from clients and internal stakeholders.

And here’s the problem:

He’s studied engineering for years to do his job. He’s great at it, which got him promoted. But he never studied project management or team leadership.

He has no idea where to get started, but his boss expects him to deliver from day one…

Isn’t that crazy?

No wonder 70% of projects fail.

And yet, it’s what happens everywhere. You learn & work for years to get promoted, but the promotion sets you up for failure.

Companies throw people in the deep end and expect them to swim. You’ve seen others run projects after all, right?

But project management is not something you learn from just seeing others do it. That’s a great start, but you only see what’s visible to you.

And you know as well as I do that’s not even half of what it takes to deliver a successful project.

Sounds familiar?

So while watching others do it is a great start, you need a proven process to follow from A to Z.

Something that adds structure to what you already know while filling in the blind spots in your knowledge. Taught without the theoretical fluff - all practical action.

If that resonates, you’re in the right place. This weekend, the doors to my course Project Management Unraveled are open to a new group of students.

In under 2 hours, the course lays out my entire playbook for managing projects, plus the templates and checklists you need to implement it today.

Here’s a quick peek of what you can expect:

At the time of writing, there are about 60 seats left. Last time around, we sold out of all 100 spots in a weekend.

So if you’re ready to take the leap from project overwhelm to leading your team with confidence, this is your chance. Let’s make the most of that promotion together.

Doors close tomorrow, Monday 24th, at midnight PST.

First come, first serve.
